People have always worn jewelry from the Indians with squash blossoms made from bones and turquoise, to the Egyptians with elaborate bracelets and metal rings. Using crystals for jewelry was started during the times of Kings and Queens and only those of royalty were allowed to wear jewels. The Royal Court usually had their own jeweler whose only job was to make jewelry for the Royal Court.

In more recent years jewelers have turned the simplest of crystals into many fine pieces of crystal rings, pendants and more. In the 1930s the jewelry makers came up with an idea of making custom jewelry which consisted of using inexpensive simulated gemstones like rhinestones and Lucite set in fake metals. The idea behind costume jewelry was you to buy inexpensive pieces to match your outfits. It was almost like the jewelry could be thrown away when done wearing it. This jewelry had no real value, except sentimental value.

You do want to take the same cautions and care when wearing your crystal rings, that you would when wearing your most expensive diamonds. You should still have your jewelery cleaned professionally  once a year. At the same time, you should also have all of your prongs checked and make sure they are all tight.  Jewelers are listening to the customer and making rings that more affordable to anyone. Back in the day, jewelry was only for the rich.
